We require different sources of energy to work and live. Solar, wind, geothermal and biomass are some of the sources. These sources aren’t only major sources of electricity, but also can be used to heat and transport. These energy sources can emit greenhouse gases when they are used to generate electricity. This means that there is a need for more sustainable sources of energy.
The most commonly used type of energy is fossil fuels, comprised of coal oil, natural gas. They were created millions of years ago when prehistoric animals and plants died and were then buried under layers of sedimentary rocks. When the conditions were right, these fossil fuels were slowly transformed into carbon-rich materials that, when burnt produce energy. These fossil fuels will not be renewable because they will be depleted in our lifetimes or over the course of many lifetimes.
Renewable energy sources are continuously replenished. The sun is the main source of renewable energy, since it supplies warmth and light. It is used to power our homes and businesses as well as to drive vehicles. Wind is a different renewable energy source that produces electricity by spinning turbines. We have been using it since we first began to harness the wind for millennia. In addition, we employ biological processes to make ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used as fuel) from waste and crop residues.
As a result hydropower is by far the most important renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are expected become the leading source of energy in the near future. Hydropower is based on nature’s water cycle to harness the power of flowing water, which is then used in turn to produce electricity.
